Following the declaration of war between Great Britain and the Boer republics in October 1899, the British were faced with Boer incursions into the Cape Colony and Natal. As a result, Lieutenant-General William Gatacre was ordered to convey his troops from East London to Queenstown to counter the advance of Boers along this route.
