“When photographing a landscape, what is the best aperture to use for optimum depth of field?”
Travis Viceray, Ryton
BRIAN SAYS… For large landscapes, the appropriate aperture depends on how much depth of field you want in your photo. Typically, you would want to maximize the depth of field, but this doesn’t mean automatically selecting f/16 or f/22 and crossing your fingers. With extreme narrow apertures, image sharpness reduces due to diffraction losses, and your shutter speed needs to be slower to balance the exposure.
It is more effective to focus your lens at the optimum subject distance where depth of field is maximized for the selected aperture – this is known as the hyperfocal distance. There are apps and online tables that can calculate
