STAMP UPDATE

BIRMINGHAM 2022 STAMPS REVEALED

Royal Mail has issued a set of eight stamps to mark the 2022 Commonwealth Games which are currently taking place in Birmingham.

The stamps were illustrated by artist Charis Tsevis and featured vivid illustrations of sports including diving; para powerlifting; athletics; and wheelchair basketball.

Royal Mail has a history of issuing stamps to mark the Commonwealth Games being held in the UK. The company has commemorated the British Empire Games 1925, Cardiff 1958, Edinburgh 1970, Edinburgh 1986, Manchester 2002 and most recently, Glasgow 2014, with stamps serving as lasting souvenirs of the event.

Ian Reid, CEO at Birmingham 2022, said: ‘These very special stamps will be a perfect reminder of the excitement and thrill people will have by being part of Birmingham 2022. The commemorative sets are a wonderful way to celebrate the Games and for the whole country to get involved in Birmingham 2022 and our festival of sport and culture!’

The stamps were issued on 28 July, the first day of the event. The Games will be held in the city and other locations across the West Midlands for the first time. The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games features 19 sports and eight para sports, with 72 nations and territories coming together to compete in 280 medal events.

Royal Mail have also issued 12 new country definitive stamps, three for each country. The designs are the same as previous country definitives but now feature the barcode in matching colour, separated by a simulated perforation line.

First Day Covers and a presentation pack have also been issued for the definitives. A Tallents House postmark is available along with four special postmarks featuring a quotation relating to each home nation. The self-adhesive stamps were printed by Cartor Security Printers in sheets of 25.
