Get away for… THE WEEKEND!

My husband and I recently relocated from east London and, luckily for us, our new home falls within the boundaries of the High Weald, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Our ‘van is ideal for exploring our new surroundings, so we headed for the historic town of Battle – on the southern side of the High Weald – for a long weekend.

It’s hard to picture, given the seemingly unspoilt nature of the landscape, but war is a recurring theme in the history of the High Weald. The geology of sands and clays yielded relatively accessible iron ore deposits which, alongside raw materials furnished by streams and forests, allowed the High Weald to function as an iron smelting centre for over 2,000 years. Manufacture of iron products – military equipment in particular – created vast wealth for some families.
