THIS month I seem to have spent most of my time building up engines out of bits. I had a requirement for three rebuilt engines, two 200Tdis and a 300Tdi. Over the last few years my workshop has been steadily filling up with incomplete and damaged engines of various types: rather than buy in another three engines for rebuilding I thought I would see whether I could resurrect some of the engines buried under piles of rubbish in the back corner of the workshop.
After an hour or so moving stuff around with the engine crane, I had my three engines: a 200Tdi with a bent conrod following some over-ambitious deep wading by one of my customers, another 200 with all the bearing shells worn down to the backing metal, and a 300 which I had bought unseen for £150 minus the turbo and manifolds. All three engines were partly stripped and missing various components, but there was nothing I could not find somewhere on the rather chaotic shelves in the parts store, except for injection pumps.
The 300 had a pump attached to it, condition unknown but unlikely to be much good. I had two other pumps on the shelf, both marked with a big white ‘X’ which I use to indicate that a
