Self-driving cars a way off

GARY Pusey quite rightly questions the validity of autonomous vehicles in the June and July issues of LRM. I have written articles on the fallacies of the topic to professional technical journals, which have never been challenged.

I doubt we shall see fully autonomous cars for a very long time. The key technical issue is sensing the environment sufficiently comprehensively so that a system can cope, in the extreme, with all the random and irrational actions of drivers of other vehicles, pedestrians, children and animals in a busy urban environment,
