I have not yet come across a facial treatment that I haven’t liked. It was the thing I missed the most during the pandemic.

Do you treat yourself to a regular facial?

Whether it’s at a salon at the hands of a skilled beauty therapist (they’re called somatologists these day) or a home treatment, a regular facial will pay dividends for years to come with a skin that remains firm and wrinkleand blemish-free, looks radiant and is properly hydrated.

It’s not for nothing that ‘glowing skin’ is the skincare term that is the most googled.

The undisputed doyenne of therapists in South Africa (beauty editors know her number by heart) is Colleen Serebro, the owner of Beauty Professionals in Victory Park, Johannesburg. With 45 years of experience under her belt, she knows the art of a facial that immediately makes a visible difference. We chatted to her about the facts around a good facial treatment.

HANDS-ON OR HI-TECH?

It depends on your requirements and mood. There is nothing better than being pampered in a salon by a skilled facial therapist (or facialist) who knows her story. For machine and technology-driven treatments, you should visit an aesthetic practice with personnel who specialise and are trained in the various procedures.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A FACIAL?

Regular facials clean the pores, exfoliate dead skin cells, hydrate and moisturise the skin and target specific skin requirements such as acne, pigmentation, blemishes, a loss of firmness
