THE HUGE BEAMS that support Judy and Robert Holland’s home, which is built entirely from recycled materials, have a salty history: they once formed Sydney’s Manly Wharf. Robert bought three semitrailer loads of timber for “20 bucks” when the pier was replaced in the late 1980s, intending to use it as the basis for their unique home in Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. “That timber is aged, it’s twisted, it’s got history and should be preserved,” Robert, 60, says.
“Our passion is recycling and repurposing old, interesting and discarded items,” Judy, 53, adds. “Everything here has a story layered in time that’s so much older than the day we acquired it.” This includes the floors made from old shearing-shed timber soaked over the years
