Activities Abound Despite Quiet Show Schedule
Having experienced a busy spring attending coin shows both locally and on the road, from late May to mid-July, with but a couple exceptions, all of my activities were local. I embarked on just two road trips, only one outside the state of Wisconsin. Actually, I seldom found myself outside the environs of Iola. Still, there were more than a few activities to command my participation along the way.
Memorial Day found me involved at the Iola Historical Society (IHS) for five hours or so, participating in the hosting of our ongoing “Salute to Veterans” pork roast luncheon, in conjunction with the local Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 of the American Legion. At this annual event, inaugurated in 2014, we provide free meals to all veterans in attendance, following their prior assembly at their nearby Legion Park. A community event, this year was a solid success, with combined attendance being upwards of 300 veterans, spouses, friends and neighbors.
The following evening, Tuesday, the monthly meetings of the Iola Historical Society were held, the board meeting at 5:30 p.m. and the membership at 6:30 p.m., with a program following. This month’s program was provided by Dr. James Maus, who recently retired following 35 years of service to the community, making him the village’s longest tenured dentist. There were 20 or so members and visitors in attendance.
