recent study found evidence that commercial strain labels are not consistent with the chemical diversity of different plant varieties. The and was published in the journal . Study co-author and CU Boulder Assistant Professor of Information Science Brian Keegan shared in a CU Boulder press statement that proper labeling is a major concern and that the cannabis industry should strive for consistency. “Our findings suggest that the prevailing labeling system is not an effective or safe way to provide information about these products,” said Keegan. “This is a real challenge for an industry that is trying to professionalize itself.” The study examined nearly 90,000 samples and mapped both the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of each one to come to this conclusion. It’s one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind and, according to Keegan, could help lead to improved labeling on cannabis products in the future. “It’s like if your cereal box only showed calories and fat and nothing else,” Keegan said. “We as consumers need to be pushing for more information. If we do that, the industry will respond.”
