URING the First World War professional boxing in the UK underwent a substantial – and understandable – slump. There was no shortage of fighters, but most of them were boxing for their regiment during rest periods behind the lines on the Western Front. The sport had boomed during 1909-1914, and it took some time to recover once hostilities had ceased.
