Make it YOURSELF
Ten-minute project Marbled vase
Taken from stylist and designer Zeena Shah’s new book, Marbling: Projects, Design Ideas and Techniques for a More Colourful Life (£15, Quadrille), this stunning upcycled glass bottle vase is simple to make in any combo of your favourite colours…
Clean a glass jar or soda bottle thoroughly using soap and water, then rinse carefully. Fill a deep bowl or bucket with room-temperature Take 3-5 colours of pre-mixed marbling inks (Marabu Easy Marble solvent-based inks were used here, from art shops and ) and add, drop-by-drop, into the water, covering the surface evenly with the first colour, then working into this layer with the remaining colours. You have around 2 minutes before the inks begin to dry, so use a toothpick to gently manipulate the ink to create a variety of patterns. Gently dip your vase into the water bath, making sure to catch all of the marbling ink (try doing this at a 45-degree angle), then pull away to reveal the pattern. Set aside to dry. The vase will be touch-dry after 20 minutes but leave it for 24 hours before sealing with spray varnish for a protective, even finish.
