1. 968 SPORT
Limited to 306 units, the UK-only 968 Sport remains one of the Porsche scene’s best-kept secrets. To understand what an amazing buy this three-litre coupe is, consider the fact it is a Club Sport with power windows, a tailgate release switch and Comfort seats (trimmed in Sport-specific cloth) in place of manual window winders and Recaro buckets. Oh, and the Sport’s wheels are painted silver instead of being body-coloured. This really is all there is to differentiate the models, other than the price – the cost of acquiring a Sport is less than half that of a Club Sport, even though the two share the same overall specification, other than the items mentioned. And, owing to the fact it started life as a Club Sport before the folk at Porsche Club Great Britain found themselves surrounded by redundant Recaros, the Sport is listed as Club Sport on its factory build sheet. Altered specification is detailed as the CS Luxury Package.
This is a Stuttgart speed machine in the truest sense – the lack of creature comforts, sound deadening and any other equipment not needed to simply point and squirt means you’re left with a relatively lightweight, track-inspired 968. There’s no distraction, just the basic controls required to chuck this thing around. And with near equal front-to-rear weight distribution and the trappings of the Club Sport chassis, this is one of the best-handling Porsches to date. Foot down and the Variocam-kitted inline-four sings. Power past 4,000rpm and it flies. The rear hatch makes the Sport practical, too. The difficulty you’ll have is finding one.
