HE male southern pochard is similar in appearance to the ferruginous duck of Europe and Asia, but it has bright red eyes rather than the white eyes of the ferruginous duck. His plumage is mainly a dark chocolate brown with lighter chestnut wings. The striking white wing bars are noticeable in flight.
