NOT all herons are long-legged birds like our native grey heron. The striated heron (), also known as the mangrove heron or green-backed heron, is quite short and stocky. From a distance, it looks a mostly grey colour with a contrasting dark cap. There are pale edges to its wingneck give it the striated name and overall its plumage is a very good camouflage. It has a relatively heavy dark bill.
