Let’s face it, learning to fish can be intimidating in Hawai‘i. From a fishing history that dates back hundreds of years to present-day social media posts that display rare trophy fish and daily catches, the tradition and modern-day culture are something to be revered.

As someone who grew up on the Mainland, fishing was as simple as throwing out a worm on a hook with a red and white “bobber” and having the patience to wait until something bit. Casting happened with a press of a button into a stocked lake, and most fish went by the names of bluegill, catfish, bass or trout. No matter the setting, coming home with a fish was a rare treat and never a necessity.
