Ian Hatton – proprietor of Verralls and all-round veteran, vintage and classic enthusiast – states: “Motorcycles that I don’t really know what they are, is what I really like.” He goes on to qualify further, explaining: “As much as anything, they’re brilliant to have in the shop [‘the shop’ being the well-known Verralls emporium in Handcross] to cause a bit of head-scratching and debate.”

This motorcycle certainly ticks those boxes. First, the certainties: the engine is definitely a Fafnir, a company explained thus in Edwin Tragatsch’s The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Motorcycles: “Pioneer
