BANGE

John Bange of Edwardsville, Illinois, USA patented his Mountain Runner in 1873 which he claimed with its two steam domes and compartmentalised boiler to be fast and agile on undulating roads. Whether this was all in his imagination is unknown.

BANTING

In 1917/19 this was a brief continuation of the Buffalo Pitts steam tractor following the 1916 merger of Kelly-Springfield and Buffalo Pitts. The Banting Machine & Supply Co of Toledo, Ohio had been a successful distributor of the tractors and, with its specialisation in steam rollers, it set up the Banting Mfg Co to continue the legacy. Unfortunately, the market for its big agricultural steamers, which it optimistically called Greyhounds, was evaporating, and what little demand there was went to established firms like Baker.
