LAST month, I commented on a feeling of déjà vu. That feeling continued as my young bird cages were filled, and I broke up most of my breeding pairs, turning the hens into flights for easier management.
I still have a few hens with chicks or on eggs, but for the most part, I have finished breeding operations for this year. My remaining 2022 closed rings should just about cope with any later-hatched youngsters, numbering up to 399.
A few seasons ago, I decided that I would number my rings from 0-99, 100-199, 200-299 and so on each year, throughout the six-year ring-colour cycle. That means all my birds over a six-year period have a unique number and so my short-hand record-keeping no longer has
