Following the death of George VI on 6 February 1952, the young Queen Elizabeth returned from Kenya with the Duke of Edinburgh and, while still in mourning for her father, 20 days after the accession, a portrait sitting was arranged.
This was necessary in order to capture the first official images of the new sovereign and these portraits would become the most significant and enduring taken of the Queen for more than a quarter of a century.
