Ah, the memories…

I have gone a bit off piste with this month’s VW Toys submission, and I hope you’ll forgive the self-indulgence. When Editor Paul told me this was going to be a Hebmüller special, it brought some wonderful memories flooding back. So here goes…

My father was in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany during the post-WWII period, supporting the Berlin Airlift. I was born in the US Zone in Frankfurt during that time.

Though I was only young at the time, I remember later living in Tripoli, Libya when my father was stationed there and bought a new 1953 Oval Window Volkswagen (see picture above). He shipped that car back to New York when we returned to America and kept it for two years after that, before trading it in on a new 1956 Ford Victoria. That’s not the interesting bit
