Get away for... THE WEEKEND!
There is nothing unusual about us sitting in the sunshine outside our campervan, surrounded by trees and watching birds hop across the grass. What is unusual is that this particular tranquil campsite is 20 minutes’ walk from the centre of Wales’ capital city, Cardiff.
For much of the way to Cardiff ‘s centre, our path followed the River Taff, allowing me to keep up the rural masquerade. The inner city didn’t intrude until we crossed the bridge into Bute Park and I spotted the national stadium’s distinctive white steel masts.
From here it was a short stroll to Cardiff Castle, alongside the Animal Wall ornamented by stone beasts, including a bear with shining eyes and a fearsome leopard. My partner, Anthony, never visited the castle in the two years he lived in Cardiff, despite it being a top tourist attraction. When I came to stay I used to spend my days sightseeing while Anthony worked. At last, Anthony would get to see what I had rhapsodised about!
