Our motorhome
“It’s not good news,” I was told by the garage servicing my Auto-Trail Apache 700 SE. It was actually far more severe than ‘not good’, it was catastrophic. Both sides of the vehicle were riddled with damp.
Finding damp in a motorhome at any time is unfortunate, but in one we’d bought just a few months earlier was soul-destroying.
It wasn’t a great start to motorhoming, especially since my wife, Katy, and I had enjoyed 12 largely trouble-free years caravanning. I’d even written about some of our adventures for MMM’s sister title, Caravan. But it was during our 2019 holiday in the south of France when towing a big white box started to lose its appeal and we began to crave the flexibility of a motorhome.
I wasn’t totally new to motorhomes, having written a few features in the early 2000s for another of MMM’s sister titles, Which Motorcaravan (now What Motorhome), and we never forgot the freedom a motorhome can offer.
After selling our caravan, we began to think in earnest about what we wanted and needed. To begin with, our two sons might be 18 and 15 but we still need to give them the opportunity to come away with us,
