Taking my new fella to meet my mam Valerie, I gave him a warning.

‘She doesn’t pull any punches, ’ I said to Brian, then 45, as we walked into the pub where Mam was waiting.

It was February 2017, and Brian and I had worked together almost a decade ago.

Then, when Brian became single in 2016, he’d reached out to me.

We shared the same sense of humour as well as a passion for military history and visiting battlefields.

Not everyone’s cup of tea – but we loved it!
