INTERMODAL FREIGHT has become one of the most important sources of traffic for the privatised Railfreight companies in recent years, with most of the journeys being made between deep water ports (Felixstowe, Southampton, Tilbury) and terminals in the hinterland (see News Analysis, p10). Domestic container traffic has replaced wagonload freight too, with containers used for MoD and supermarket traffic, the former sometimes utilising standard ISO containers.
