Most botanists lead placid lives, but Frenchman Aimé Bonpland was an exception. During the French Revolution and Revolutionary Wars, Bonpland served as a surgeon in the French army and navy, but his real interest lay in botany, which he studied with leading scientists in Paris. Being something of an adventurer, he longed to visit remote countries and study their flora.
