SNP and fieldsports are on a knife-edge

Early one morning in 2007 I was cycling across the Clyde Arc — or, as it is better known in Glasgow, the Squinty Bridge. At the time I lived in Anderston on the north bank of the Clyde and was on my way to work in East Renfrewshire. As I neared the far side of the bridge I saw a tall, slim frame and an unmistakable tie and realised I was heading at top speed towards Jon Snow of Channel 4 News.

It was the day after the Scottish parliamentary election and the event that had brought my personal news hero to Glasgow was the capture by the Scottish National Party of Glasgow Govan. The SNP won command of the Scottish parliament in that election and has held it ever since.
