When the citizens of Great Britain were called to war in 1939, millions of men would be needed to join the ranks of those who battled the Germans and their Axis allies in the seas, air and land across Europe, Asia and North Africa. As with other countries involved in this world conflict, British women soon joined in the fight by volunteering for the military auxiliary services.
