The Washington Monument

As early as 1783, Congress wanted to erect a monument to the country’s first president, George Washington. But construction of the obelisk didn’t begin until 1848. Then, after reaching less than one third of its total height, work on the Washington Monument stopped. A lack of funds and the Civil War (1861–1865) made it difficult to continue.

Work resumed on the monument in 1878 and was completed in 1888. Built primarily of bluestone and gneiss, it contains
