SPRING TIDES: A STORY FROM A SMALL ISLAND

BY FIONA GELL

WEIDENFELD & NICOLSON, £16.99 (HB)

Disillusioned with life as a jet-setting marine biologist with a growing reputation and a carbon footprint to match, Dr Gell returned to her native Isle of Man 12 years after having “escaped” to go to university. She took up a post at the somewhat ramshackle Port Erin Marine Laboratory and started out on a path that would eventually see her shepherd into existence the island’s first-ever Marine Nature Reserve.

What Gell’s narrative lacks in suspense – there are some objections to the proposed reserve (notably from fishermen) but by sensitive interaction she gets most residents on side – is made up for by some lyrical descriptions of Manx sea life and a chilling encounter
