Aiming to improve
The 2021/22 DStv Premiership finally drew to a close last month and with its conclusion came a time for reflection at SuperSport United.
The three-time Premiership champions ended the season in a disappointing eighth position in the league standings to narrowly sneak into next season’s MTN8 competition ahead of Lamontville Golden Arrows by virtue of a stronger goal-difference.
Despite starting the domestic campaign with an impressive seven-match unbeaten streak, which included wins over Golden Arrows, Swallows FC, Maritzburg United and Baroka FC, inconsistency ultimately proved to be Matsatsantsa’s biggest downfall with the team going on to record 10 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats across their 30 matches over the course of the year, dropping points from winning positions in five different fixtures along the way.
“The season was actually a good one for us but there were times where we just went through difficult patches as a team,”SuperSport forward Iqraam Rayners says. “It feels like sometimes things don’t happen for you and that you just don’t get that little bit of luck that you need.”
