‘We should have won trophies’

At birth in November 1979 at a police camp in Lusaka, it was inevitable that the latest addition to the Mutapa household would turn into a footballer.

The new baby was Perry and along with older brother Oswald Jnr, was born to Oswald Mutapa Snr, who played the game in his younger years before coaching the Zambian youth national teams.

His older brother – who is a policeman like his late father – also played the game and is now the technical advisor at Zambian league champions Red Arrows having also served as an assistant coach to Micho Sredojevic when the Serbian oversaw Chipolopolo.

It seems football runs in the Mutapa family with Perry’s two sons – who are named after Manchester United players Eric Cantona and Patrice Evra – already setting the scene alight in youth football.

“My younger son Evra will become one of the biggest stars because he is that good and I say this because that is what everyone else has been saying based on what they have seen of him. My older son Eric is also playing the game,” says Mutapa with a chuckle.
