The hoodia plant (), also called ghaap, is indigenous to Southern Africa and southern Namibia, where it grows in deep Kgalagadi sands and on dry, stony slopes and flats. In South Africa, it is distributed in the north-eastern part of the Western Cape and the northern and northwestern regions of the Northern Cape.
