Rig a preventer
I agree with Oliver Perkins’ tip to rig a preventer (YM, April 2022). However, the way the preventer is rigged always keeps the boom on the same tack, even if the boat gybes, which might lead to an unwanted outcome.
I have solved the problem by installing a figure 8 descender on the boom with a shackle (photo 1, right). I then rig the rope making it fast to the port toerail (photo 2), then it goes to the descender, to a block on the starboard toerail and to a cleat close to the cockpit on the starboard toerail.
