I have always believed that the ultimate justification for fishing and shooting is that they put food in our bellies. This aspect of the two sports that I love so dearly brings me deep pleasure and satisfaction. Somehow, it makes them more complete and fulfilling activities.
I often reflect how trout in rivers, pheasants in woods and grouse in the heather enjoy an infinitely freer, better and generally longer life than chickens in sheds, creatures destined for slaughter at the grand old age of five or six weeks.
