GASTRIC ULCERS: A COMMON PROBLEM

Although you might think only racehorses and other elite athletes are susceptible to gastric ulcers—erosions of the lining of the stomach—any horse can develop them. Risk factors include transportation, competition or high-intensity training, hospitalization and a low-forage diet. That said, the predisposition to ulcers varies, due to physiological factors and even personality type. For example, a horse who is too anxious to eat while away from home may be more susceptible to gastric ulcers than a calmer companion who settles down readily with his hay net.
