Northumbrian Notes

MY BREEDING season is going reasonably well, although “late” is still an ongoing description. At the time of writing, young are just into double figures, with a good number of nests due in the next seven days or so. Most are second rounds, for one reason or another.

These include the clear round I reported in the last “Notes” (May 18 issue), and the hen that did not sit the first round. Those first-round eggs were moved to one of the feeder hens and did hatch, albeit after 16 days, and the feeder is doing a great job rearing all four chicks.
