Government turns up the heat on lead

The use of lead shot and ammunition could be banned within 18 months under proposals announced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The HSE proposals are a result of measures bringing UK REACH (registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals) broadly into line with its EU equivalent.

The government agency compiled two dossiers of recommendation following a 60-day call for evidence last year. There is now a six-month consultation period, which started on 6 May, the day its recommendations were announced. The proposals include:

A ban on the sale of lead shot

A ban on all types of lead ammunition for live quarry shooting

A ban on lead shot for outdoor target shooting There could
