Everybody welcome

HONGI TO HĀNGI: AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN, TVNZ 1, Tuesday, June 14 & 21, 7.30pm

The publicity material for Hongi to Hāngi describes it as “warm-hearted” and it’s a particularly apt phrase for the show. It addresses something many New Zealanders still find forbidding or mystifying – pōwhiri and other elements of marae protocol – with an easy, inclusive humour.

A good part’s presenter, reporter Tāmati Rimene-Sproat, an impish presence who opens the show by literally welcoming viewers to the table. He says the gentle tone was a conscious decision.
