Buried alive

Heading home from a school trip, a group of 26 children were looking forward to telling parents about the fun they’d had.

It was 4pm on 15 July 1976.

Bus driver Ed Ray, then 55, was driving the 19 girls and seven boys, aged between 5 and 14, home.

They’d been at Chowchilla fairgrounds swimming pool, in California.

As Ed drove along, he spotted a van parked in the road, blocking the way.

Ed wondered if the man standing beside the vehicle needed help.
