There are many analog meters to be found at garage sales, swap meets, and in our shack junk boxes. Many of these units have unknown operating parameters: Current, voltage, and resistance. Here’s a circuit (Figure 1) to help identify unknown meter movements. Besides this circuit, the only other test equipment needed is a digital multimeter (DMM) containing a DC voltmeter, DC ammeter, and ohmmeter. If your DMM does not contain an ammeter section, it can still be used in this application.
