With major motor manufacturers stating short-term goals of complete electrification of their line ups, and stalwarts like Ford launching a questionable reincarnation of its most iconic model in electric form, surely it’s only a matter of time before VW follows suit and attempts to stitch us up with an equally poor, plug-in replacement for its own legend?

But why wait for a soul-less version of the Beetle when you could turn an original into a 21st century automobile that retains the soul and character of a classic?
