It’s not easy to nap comfortably in the back of a Suzuki Jimny, especially if you’re 1,9 m tall like me. It’s pitch black outside and I must sleep, because in three hours it will be my turn to drive. My wife, Suzaan, is behind the wheel, and our 14-year-old daughter, Miri, is helping her stay awake.
We’re driving from Graskop in Mpumalanga to our home in Cape Town in one stretch through the night. As I half sit, half lie with my knees between my elbows, I think back to the reason for torturing ourselves like this. I suspect it all started with a woodcarving of a giraffe…
