Sleeper is a frequently misused term in the modified car world. All too often we see a car that has aftermarket alloys referred to as such, in the same way anything that has a straight axle, or even just a vaguely nose-up stance, is deemed a gasser by some. We’ll leave that one there, concentrating instead on what we feel constitutes a genuine sleeper.
It should be an old car you don’t expect to go fast for a start. A ’69 ZL1 Camaro, for example, came with skinny tyres on steels and dog dish hubcaps, but man does it ever look tough. Similarly, a ’67 427 Fairlane, though the stacked headlights and swooping roof line give it real street presence. And the manufacturers of both couldn’t resist little things like engine call-outs on the wings, subtle spoilers and cowl-induction air intakes.
