There is a fantastic triangle of roads in the Adelaide hills you can ride in either direction many times and not get bored. A mixture of roads that twist and turn along the floor of a narrow winding valley before climbing steep hills to roll up and down along ridges.

Carve through sweepers, drop into shallow valleys, ride into a jumble of right-angled bends, curves with decreasing radiuses that open out to short straights before another jumble of turns with rising and falling roads. At the corners of the triangle there are great pubs, cafes, a fantastic museum, the home of a local motorcycle hero and an absolute gem of a locally created motor museum where you might just meet an icon of Australian motor racing.

It all lies at the heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, but getting there and riding beyond adds so much more to a one-or two-day ride from Adelaide.

Starting from the state capital, ride out on the South Eastern Freeway for a few short minutes to the Eagle on the Hill turn-off. This first stage was transformed from a narrow, choked, twisting four-lane road just over 20 years ago to the safe, smooth, multi-laned highway it is today. In fact, part of the old highway now lies 12m below the surface of the new road.

However, at the turn-off, the old road begins pretty well
