Black wattle reduces cattle feeding costs and adds value to community-owned dairy

Farmers have always been reluctant to feed black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) to dairy cattle because of its high tannin content.

However, Piers Kenyon, a consultant at Nestlé’s Yes Programme, told journalists during a Nestlé-sponsored media trip to Springfield Dairy, near Swartberg in KwaZulu-Natal, that contrary to expectations, black wattle did not affect feed intake, milk production, or animal health.
