This month I will be offering advice to a common problem experienced by watercolourists – how to control your watercolour washes to achieve clean and vibrant results. A watercolour wash is one of the most important techniques to master in watercolour painting. It’s also the most useful, used in skies, large areas of a landscape painting, calm areas in a still life and backgrounds for so many subjects.
I was fortunate to be taught this technique at a young age. Our art teacher made us practise watercolour washes every week until we had learnt it properly. The practice we put in ensured that watercolour washes became second nature, but in my workshops I find that it’s something that students struggle with.
