Back to basics: gouache

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

What is gouache and the materials you’ll need to paint with it

How to use the paint

TOP TIPS

1 Make enough paint! Gouache is expensive, but if you start with too little paint for a project, I guarantee you’ll reach the point where you need more of a colour and trying to match it will be a nightmare. Instead, make a little more than you think you need. If it ends up being too much, it won’t go to waste, because it can be reconstituted, and you can always use it for another project.

2 Gouache paintings should never be rolled up; they should always be stored flat. Rolling a gouache painting can result in it cracking or chipping, because gouache sits on the surface of the paper as opposed to watercolour, which is absorbed. I keep my paintings in plastic sleeves when I’m not working on them.
