Habits are hard to break. We’ve all fished for various species across different months of the year and it’s easy to become stuck in a rut.
Freshwater fishing is a great example.
One train of thought is that winter is the “off season” for freshwater natives and that fish such as trout are more productive in winter. While in some ways, that’s true, it’s also not that simple and all of these species can be targeted through each season with a different approach.
The different approach is what’s important. Understanding each species in depth and how they live, feed, breed and migrate goes a long way to developing skills and having a broader approach to fishing in all seasons and conditions.
CLOSED SEASONS
Before gong any further, it’s important to note closed seasons. They differ in each state and each species. Many are in winter. It goes without saying, these closed seasons are there for a reason and should never be ignored. State Fisheries implement the closed seasons to facilitate
