Alice Morrison, 58, is a former media chief executive from Edinburgh. Following redundancy, she moved to Morocco in 2014, and five years later, began her biggest adventure.
When I told my mum I was yearning for adventure, she wisely observed, ‘Adventurers have to adventure.’ I owe my intrepid spirit to my parents, who moved us to Africa when I was six weeks old. It is by their example that I believe there’s nothing I can’t do. I moved to Morocco in January 2014 to train for the Marathon des Sables, which I’d signed up for on my 50th birthday. I fell in love with the country and decided to stay.
Four years later, I felt a need to be in the wild, and trekking Morocco’s Draa River seemed fitting. It would take a year to plan and three months to walk the 1,500 km distance.
